THE DRENKA WILLEN PRIZE FOR POETRY IN TRANSLATION

Thanks to the generosity of Harcourt Publishers, the Writing Division of the School of the Arts at Columbia University was given $5,000 to honor the work of Drenka Willen, the distinguished Harcourt editor of translations of Günter Grass, Umberto Eco, Octavio Paz, Italo Calvino, Jose Saramago, and Wyslawa Szymborska, among many others. Ms Willen desired that this sum be given to a student translator of poetry into English whose work in the faculty's opinion merits this award. Michael Scammell and Timothy Donnelly judged the prize.

The Drenka Willen Prize for Poetry in Translation was awarded to Andriana Mastor  for her translations from the Greek of poems by Yannis Ritsos & George Seferis.
The runners-up were Frances Cha (translating from the Korean), David Francis (from the Spanish of José Asunción Silva), Janice Greenwood (from the Italian of Giacomo da Lentini), Fayre Makeig (from Persian of Rumi), Bilal Tanweer (from the Urdu of Ahmed Faiz) & Emily Wolahan (from the French of Philippe Soupault).
